13 “You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness,
14 “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden.

What exactly does Jesus mean when he says, "You are the salt and light of the world?"

Why were these two types of elements so special and used by Jesus in his teaching when there are many other things on Earth that Jesus could use?

How can we be the light of the world, of which Jesus was the source?

When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” We can only expect to remain salt and light in the world if we keep our attention on Christ as our source of light and taste of our faith and if we obey Him.

What are the uses of Salt?
  1. Seasoning - that balances the flavor of the food we're eating. If Jesus says that his disciples are the salt of the earth, he implies that those who follow and learn from his teachings are the ones who bring balance - and spread the gospel teaching.

  2. Preservative - it means, salt is used to preserved the food, in order to prevent it from corruption. It is, in fact, the main job of the apostles; to preserve the faith of the listeners that continually learning the word.

  3. Disinfectant - is used to keep us safe from illnesses and harm.

  4. Weed killer - implication: Keep the faithful servant from being corrupted by sinful men.

  5. Component of a Ceremonial offering : Romans: "We are a living offering/sacrifice

  6. Unit of Exchange (medium of exchange) - in exchange for goods

Beginning of the Ministry Journey of Christ:

According to Matthew 5, Jesus Christ went to a hillside and preached to his disciples. The first lesson Jesus taught was about the word "beatitudes." Pertaining to what we have read, it is the first lesson he taught to his disciples, but it turns out to be the least to develop.
